When it comes to supporting a healthy gut, two supplements that we frequently recommend are fiber and butyrate. While they can both support gut health, they play very different roles and understanding the relationship between the two is important.

What Is Butyrate?

Butyrate is a type of short chain fatty acid (SCFA) produced by beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Short-chain fatty acids play an important role in digestive and overall gut health. At The Institute of Natural Health, we often see patients with low short-chain fatty acid levels on stool testing, which can be one reason we may recommend supplementing with butyrate directly.

But there is another piece of the equation: helping your body make its own.

Fiber Helps Your Gut Make Butyrate

One of the primary ways to naturally produce butyrate is through eating fiber and resistant starches.

Here's how it works:

When we consume certain types of fiber, our gut bacteria ferment that fiber. One of the results of that fermentation is the production of short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate.

That means fiber isn't simply something that helps keep digestion moving. It also provides fuel for the bacteria that help produce beneficial compounds within the gut.

Butyrate Now, Fiber for the Long Term

So why supplement with butyrate if fiber can help your body produce it naturally?

There can be value in providing butyrate directly, particularly when someone needs short-term support. But fiber addresses the foundation of the process.

Butyrate can provide direct support, while fiber gives your gut bacteria the raw material they need to produce more of it themselves.

Ideally, we're getting plenty of fiber through whole foods and a diverse diet. However, there are situations where supplementation may be useful as part of a personalized approach to gut health.

Supporting Your Gut From the Ground Up

Gut health isn't about finding one magic supplement. It's about supporting the systems that allow your gut to function properly.

For some people, that may include increasing dietary fiber and resistant starches. For others, targeted supplementation may provide additional short-term support while underlying nutritional and lifestyle factors are addressed.

The right approach depends on the individual.
